Write for The Art Newsletter
Who we are
The Art Newsletter is an independent, Austin-based publication covering art, music, literature, film, and contemporary culture.
We publish work that moves across disciplines — writing that treats culture as something interconnected rather than isolated into categories.
Our goal is to create a space for thoughtful, independent cultural writing outside of traditional media structures.
What we’re looking for
We are interested in original writing that engages seriously with culture.
This can include:
- essays on art, music, literature, or film
- cultural criticism and commentary
- artist-focused pieces or profiles
- reflections on creative work or process
- writing that connects culture to broader ideas or lived experience
We are especially drawn to writing that has:
- a clear voice
- a strong point of view
- attention to form and language
- a sense of intention
What we publish
Our pieces are typically:
- reflective, essay-driven, or analytical
- grounded in a specific idea or observation
- written with care and clarity
Length is flexible, but most pieces fall between:
- 800–2,000 words
What we’re not looking for
We do not publish:
- generic list-style content
- surface-level summaries
- promotional writing (see our advertising page)
- AI-generated or unedited work
- submissions that are not aligned with our editorial tone
We also recommend reading a few of our pieces before submitting.
What to include in your submission
Please send:
- a complete draft or a detailed pitch
- a short description of the piece
- 1–3 writing samples (if available)
- a brief introduction about yourself
We are more likely to accept submissions that already feel like finished pieces rather than vague ideas.
A note on compensation
At this stage, we are primarily publishing contributors on an unpaid basis.
We view The Art Newsletter as a platform for emerging writers and artists to share their work with a growing audience.
As the publication grows, we are working toward expanding paid opportunities for contributors.
Before submitting
We recommend reading through our archive to understand the kind of work we publish.
Submissions that clearly align with our tone and interests are much more likely to be accepted.
