A must-watch if you're into surrealism, think 'Atlanta' but tied to the ever-present question of what it means to believe. It's a slow burn; it takes a while to get to the meaning of the film, but it's shot absolutely beautifully. If you're into art house films, this is the kind you'll really enjoy. For me, it was my first exposure to Vietnamese-language film, directed by Phạm Thiên Ân, who works out of Vietnam and Houston. This film won many international awards.

**Silence (2016)**
**Directed by Martin Scorsese**

One of the best Christian films I've seen. Two 17th-century Portuguese missionaries, Father Sebastian Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Father Francisco Garupe (Adam Driver), embark on a perilous journey to Japan to find their missing mentor (Liam Neeson). It's in the same vein as Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, shot absolutely beautifullym but with more action. Set in Japan during a period of intense Christian persecution. What fascinates me most is that the same director made The Wolf of Wall Street, often called one of the most sinful films ever made, and also made this: a portrait of the suffering Japanese Christians endured under the Jesuit-mission era persecution. It's a film I thought about for days after watching. Highly recommend.

**A Hidden Life (2019)**
**Directed by Terrence Malick**

Probably one of the most beautiful Christian films you've never heard of. It tells the true story of Franz, an Austrian farmer who refused to swear allegiance to the Nazis during World War II — and had chances to walk it back that he never took. The cinematography alone makes it required viewing. Malick has made several films that wrestle with Christian faith, but this one doesn't get the attention it deserves. Highly recommend if you're interested in war drama and a deeply human portrayal of Nazi-era Germany and Austria.
